Work Permits – Explained

The process of applying for a work permit can be a lengthy one, although one which is worth the wait!

It can take anywhere from 6-8 weeks for the individual to receive the permit once an application has been made, why is why it is important for overseas candidates requiring a work permit to plan well in advance of
their intended trip to the UK.

Employers also need to satisfy certain criteria before a Work Permit can be issued which again, can be very time consuming, and it is recommended that employers allow around 3 months for the full process to be turned around.

Employers can initiate applications by calling the Department for Education and Employment on
0114 207 4074, and application forms can be obtained by applying on- line.

It is important to note that you cannot start work legally until a Work Permit has been issued for you. Also, a Work Permit is not NORMALLY transferrable under any circumstances, therefore if you wish to work for a different (UK employer) practice, then that practice must apply for a separate Work Permit.

It is important you check whether there are any exceptions before considering changing employer.

If you are an overseas applicant and have any queries, please contact Pauline
